Canine Good Citizen

  • AKC CGC Program was started in 1989 as a way to encourage dog owners to train their dogs. It rewards dogs who display good social behavior.
  • As of January 2013, CGC is an official AKC title that can go at the end of your dog’s name.
  • In the CGC test your dog is asked to:
    • Greet a friendly stranger
    • Sit politely for petting
    • Stand for grooming
    • Walk on a loose lead
    • Walk calmly through a crowd
    • Sit and stay on command
    • Come when called
    • Behave politely with a strange dog
    • React calmly and confidently to distractions
    • Sit for 3 minutes with a stranger
  • Tollers easily achieve their CGC with proper early socialization and basic puppy obedience training.
  • AKC Community Canine is the advanced CGC – the CGCA title.
