New York, NY - The American Kennel Club® is pleased to announce that 30 Junior
Scholarships have been awarded to students from 14 states and Puerto Rico. The
scholarships for high school, college and graduate school students range from
$1,000 to $5,000 each for a total of $50,000.
"The students we recognize with these awards are the future leaders of our
sport," said Mari-Beth O'Neill, AVP of Special Services. "Despite their youth,
the honorees have already reached the highest levels of competition in many AKC
events. We feel that they should be rewarded for their dedication to dogs and it
is our hope that with this scholarship they will continue their growth and
development throughout their college years."
Applicants were evaluated based on academic history and involvement in the sport
of purebred dogs with special consideration for those who were active in AKC
clubs and events. In addition, applicants were required to submit an essay
describing their experience in the fancy, the significance of the sport in their
lives and ways in which they have been an ambassador for purebred dogs in their
schools and communities.
The 30 recipients represent a cross section of the fancy today, with
participation in many different AKC events. Students range from third and fourth
generation exhibitors to those who found their way to their first dog events by
chance. Their achievements include winning the AKC/Eukanuba National
Championship Junior Showmanship Competition, winning a height class at the AKC
National Agility Championship, and becoming National Merit Scholars and Class
Valedictorians. Future aspirations of this year's winners include going on to
veterinary and law school, entering the business and teaching fields and, of

AKC ENHANCES AND RENAMES ILP PROGRAM AS "PUREBRED ALTERNATIVE
LISTING"
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: December 10, 2007
Contact: Daisy Okas
Phone: 212-696-8343
-- New Features Offer Additional Benefits and Incentives --
New York, NY - The American Kennel Club® has announced the enhancement and
renaming of its Indefinite Listing Privilege (ILP) program. The new name --
Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) program - will officially take effect
February 1, 2008.
The new name more accurately describes the purpose of the program: allowing dogs
that are ineligible for registration but are distinguishable as a member of an
AKC registrable breed, to participate in AKC Companion Events, AKC Performance
Events and AKC Juniors competition.
The ILP/PAL program is designed to address the various reasons a purebred dog
might not be eligible for registration: the dog may be from an unregistered
litter or have unregistered parents; papers may have been withheld or lost by
its owner; or the dog may have been surrendered, lost or abandoned, then adopted
by a new owner.
PAL enrollees will receive a copy of Family Dog Magazine, a subscription to
AKC's e-newsletter "Your AKC," a flyer from the breed's Parent Club and an
attractive certificate denoting their dog's place in the PAL program. Also
included will be information on AKC Pet Healthcare and AKC Companion Animal
Recovery enrollment.
"We currently enroll over 3,000 dogs per year in the ILP/PAL program. It is our
hope that we can expand this number and the overall appeal of the program by
offering added benefits and renaming the program with this more creative and
friendly acronym," said Assistant Vice President of Customer Service, Mari Beth
O'Neill. "Welcoming more ILP/PAL dogs to the world of AKC events and privileges
can only benefit both dogs and owners by providing educational resources and
also exposing them to the joys of competing with your dog."
Dogs which currently have ILP numbers will retain their original numbers and
continue to enter events under that number. PAL numbers will be issued beginning
February 1, 2008.

NOVEMBER CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Daisy Okas
Date: November 13, 2007
Phone: 212-696-8343
New York, NY - The American Kennel Club has been advocating for purebred
dog owners since our founding in 1884. Yet in 1990 we stepped up our
efforts in the political arena with the formation of the Canine
Legislation department. Now the time has come again for AKC to further
enhance our role in protecting owners' and breeders' rights. As we gear
up for the 2008 legislative year, which promises to be one filled with
breed bans, breeding restrictions, litter permits, excessive licensing
fees and other threats to our rights to own and breed dogs, we want to
remind fanciers about our commitment.
As the number and intensity of our battles increase, we too must
increase our arsenal of weapons to combat such onerous proposals. In
the last few years from coast-to-coast we fought high profile battles on
various proposals, from California's mandatory spay/neuter bill to New
York's "crop and dock ban" and hundreds of others in between.
In response to these growing threats, we established the AKC Canine
Legislation Support Fund. This fund was created to enhance the AKC's
Canine Legislation Department's ability to send staff across the country
to meet with lawmakers and constituents as well as hire consultants and
lobbyists at the state level. This fund can accept non tax-deductible
donations from individuals, dog clubs, and organizations. This fund's
need was demonstrated, when for the first-time ever, AKC hired a state
lobbyist in California to combat AB 1634.
On another, but equally important and supporting front, the AKC has also
established the AKC Humane Fund to help spread the word about
responsible dog ownership through public education and grant-giving. The
AKC Humane Fund's goal will be to accept tax-deductible donations from
individuals, AKC clubs and other like-minded organizations to further
its mission, "to unite a broad spectrum of animal lovers in promoting
the joy and value of responsible and productive pet ownership through
education, outreach and grant-making."
The AKC Humane Fund's focus will not be legislative but rather effecting
canine culture in this country through positive involvement with
American dog owners to create a stable, more enlightened dog ownership
environment.
I also wanted to update you on the progress of the formation of our AKC
Political Action Committee (PAC). As you may know, a PAC is a private
organization that collects funds from its members and makes political
contributions to elected officials and candidates for public office.
PACs that solicit funds and make donations to federal officeholders and
candidates must be registered with the Federal Election Commission
(FEC).
Because of the unique membership structure of the AKC, the AKC first had
to seek an Advisory Opinion from the FEC as to who its "members" were
for the purpose of soliciting PAC contributions. On Oct. 11, 2007, the
FEC issued an opinion holding that all of the members of the AKC member
and licensed clubs were members of the AKC for solicitation purposes. At
its November meeting, the AKC Board of Directors appointed the following
AKC PAC Board members:
David Merriam - AKC Board member
Bill Newman - AKC Board member
Patti Strand - AKC Board member
Louis Auslander - Chicago, IL
Dr. Anthony D. DiNardo - Hartford, CT
Alan Kalter - Ann Arbor, MI
Gail LaBerge - Buford, GA
Walter Bebout - AKC
James Stevens - AKC
We look forward to working with the dog fancy to help influence
legislation and expand our ability to educate the public about
responsible dog ownership, which lies at the root of fighting all
anti-dog bills. If everyone was a model responsible dog owner then
legislation threatening our rights as dog owners and breeders wouldn't
be the reality it is today. While we believe in education as the key to
all problems concerning dog ownership - it's clear that more is needed -
and we know the tools we have just put in place will help us accomplish
that. For more information please visit www.akc.org
Sincerely,
Ron Menaker

VICTIMS OF CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES
-- Take the Lead Poised to Help Human Victims --
New York, NY - The American Kennel Club and AKC Companion Animal Recovery have
reached out to AKC affiliated dog clubs as well as local disaster officials to
offer assistance in the wake of the California wildfires.
AKC is also working closely with Take the Lead - an organization which provides
direct services, support and care for people in the sport of purebred dogs who
are affected by tragedies -- in order to ensure that offers of support are
extended to both the human and canines affected by these fires.
"Since Monday we have been contacting AKC clubs in the affected areas as well as
disaster officials, such as the County of San Diego Department of Animal
Services," said Dennis B. Sprung, AKC President and CEO. "Fortunately, it
appears that both people and animals are being well cared for and evacuated
safely, so there are no immediate needs. We are relieved to find that the
majority of our constituents' needs are being met however we want to stress our
willingness to assist wherever needed. Together with Take the Lead, our two
organizations are poised to do whatever we can to ease the burden of this
terrible tragedy."
In order to proactively ensure that provisions are available immediately if
needed, AKC has coordinated with the California Federation of Dog Clubs to
provide food, collars, leashes and crates to be available at a central Southern
California location. Dog clubs, shelters or individuals in need of assistance
are asked to contact Corporate Project Manager Marcy Zingler at
mlz@akc.org or 212-696-8346.

October 2007 - Federal Election Commission Issues
Favorable Advisory Opinion on AKC PAC
| [Thursday, October 18, 2007] |
At its October 11, 2007 meeting the
Federal Election Commission (FEC) unanimously approved an Advisory
Opinion permitting the American Kennel Club® to create a Political
Action Committee (PAC) with a solicitable class that includes all
members of AKC member and licensed clubs.
"We are very pleased with this outcome as it recognizes the close
relationship between the AKC and all of our member and licensed clubs,
and will allow us to draw support from those with a vested interest in
canine legislation," said AKC Board Chairman Ron Menaker. "This action
by the FEC clears the way for us to launch an AKC PAC in the very near
future."
The AKC Board of Directors is expected to approve a structure for an AKC
PAC and elect a PAC Board of Directors at its November meeting, and to
formally launch the PAC at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Dog
Show in Long Beach, California in December### |
August 2007 - AKC TAKES INITIAL STEP TOWARD FORMATION OF
POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Daisy Okas

AKC TAKES INITIAL STEP TOWARD FORMATION OF
POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE
- Requests Advisory Opinion From FEC on Status of
Member and Affiliated Clubs -
New York, NY -On Friday, August 10, 2007 a request was filed with the
General Counsel of the Federal Election Commission (FEC) seeking an
opinion on whether the American Kennel Club(r) and its member and
affiliate dog clubs are "membership organizations" as defined under
relevant FEC regulations, and whether the AKC(r) and its member and
affiliated clubs are "affiliated" within the meaning of applicable FEC
regulations. The request was filed by attorney Timothy W. Jenkins of
O'Connor & Hannan LLP of Washington, DC on behalf of the AKC.
"Last week's filing with the FEC is the first and arguably most
significant step toward giving the AKC and the dog fancy a crucial tool
for positively affecting dog legislation at the federal and state
level," said Ron Menaker, AKC's Chairman of the Board. Menaker informed
the fancy of the AKC's intentions to form a PAC during the June 2007
Delegate meeting.
The FEC opinion will determine the scope of the universe of individuals
that the AKC can legally solicit for contributions to its PAC. In
emphasizing the importance of careful and deliberate steps toward
formation of a PAC representing purebred dog fanciers, Menaker noted
that the AKC has carefully considered this action for nearly a year,
stating "many people think that all an organization has to do to form a
PAC is to start soliciting money. In fact, the process can be very
complicated, particularly given the unusual membership structure of the
AKC and its member and affiliated clubs. It is essential that we
proceed in a deliberate and legal manner."
AKC President Dennis B. Sprung called the filing of the FEC request a
"watershed event in the history of the AKC. We have been very aggressive
in advocating for the rights and interests of purebred dog owners and
breeders through our Canine Legislation Department, our federal
legislative consultant, our state federations of dog clubs, and our
individual member and licensed clubs, but without a PAC, the dog fancy
has been fighting with one hand tied behind their backs. A PAC will
enable us to be infinitely more effective in representing our
interests."
Sprung added that he was optimistic that a prompt and favorable response
would be forthcoming from the FEC, and that an AKC PAC could be formally
launched before the end of the year.

July 2007 - AKC INTRODUCES CONDITIONAL REGISTRATION
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: July 5, 2007
Contact: Daisy Okas
Phone: 212-696-8343
AKC INTRODUCES CONDITIONAL REGISTRATION
New York, NY - The American Kennel Club(r) Conditional Registration
program is now available for any AKC(r)-registered dog whose parent,
through DNA testing, is found to be unidentifiable. Rather than
canceling the registrations of the individual dog, all of its
littermates and all of their offspring, AKC will change affected dogs'
registration to the conditional status.
The conditional status will be clearly noted on the registration or
pedigree of the unknown dog, as well as all progeny for three
generations, with the letter Q starting the AKC registration number.
Conditional status will only be granted in cases where the dog is
believed to be purebred, but a registered parent is found to be
incorrect.
"The Conditional Registration program will foster better relationships
with dog owners who discover that there is an unidentified ancestor in
their purebred dog's pedigree," said Thomas Sharp, Assistant Vice
President of Compliance. "Now these owners will not be penalized with a
revoked AKC registration and the loss of a majority of its benefits. For
example, a dog with Conditional registration may still participate in
any event in which ILP dogs may participate, including Obedience,
Agility, and Rally."
Conditional registration also offers informed breeders the ability to
keep these dogs and their offspring in a breed's gene pool. To register
a litter out of a sire and dame with conditional registration, both
parents must be DNA-profiled. After three generations of DNA-profiled
parents, the registrations will revert to regular for the litter in the
fourth generation. This protocol is in line with the acceptance of
imported dogs with three generation pedigrees from the country of
origin.

June 2007 - AKC DELEGATE BODY PASSES RESOLUTION OPPOSING CA
AB 1634
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Daisy Okas
Date: June 13, 2007 Phone: 212-696-8343
AKC DELEGATE BODY PASSES RESOLUTION OPPOSING CA AB 1634
New York, NY -A resolution proposed by the American Kennel Club(r)
Board of Directors opposing California Assembly Bill 1634 was
unanimously adopted by the AKC(r) Delegate Body at its quarterly
meeting, held Monday, June 11, 2007, in Las Vegas. The bill would
require all dogs and cats over the age of four months to be spayed or
neutered unless the owners qualify for and obtain an intact animal
permit. The AKC Delegates, who represent 599 member clubs out of the
nearly 5,000 AKC affiliated clubs nationwide (more than 460 of them in
California), issued the following resolution on Monday in response to
proposed Assembly Bill 1634:
"Be it resolved that the Delegates of the American Kennel Club declare
that the enactment of AB1634 in the State of California would 1) be
detrimental to the sport of purebred dogs; 2) fail to achieve the humane
results it purports to espouse; and 3) cost the State of California and
its communities tens of millions of dollars in lost revenues.
Be it further resolved that the Delegates of the American Kennel Club
urge the Governor, the Senate and the Assembly of the State of
California to defeat AB1634."
"This resolution represents our steadfast opposition to this bill and
any others which unfairly target the responsible breeders that make up
our constituency," said AKC President and CEO Dennis Sprung. "We are
deeply concerned about the problems irresponsible dog owners,
irresponsible breeding, and inadequate animal control can cause a
community; however, mandatory spaying and neutering has proven to be an
ineffective solution because it fails to address the heart of the
issue-irresponsible ownership. The AKC and its clubs support
non-discriminatory, fair, effective and enforceable legislation that
addresses the pertinent animal issues in the community. "

June 2007 - AKC INTRODUCES ONLINE RECORD KEEPING
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Daisy Okas
Date: June 5, 2007 Phone: 212-696-8343
AKC INTRODUCES ONLINE RECORD KEEPING
-- Free, Web-based Service Helps Breeders Manage Dog and Litter Records --
New York, NY - The American Kennel Club® is pleased to announce that Online
Record Keeping, a new service for breeders of AKC® registered litters and dogs,
is now available. Any breeder with a My AKC account now has access to this free
service, which provides a centralized area to manage and maintain dog and litter
records online.
"We are pleased to offer breeders of AKC dogs this new complimentary online
feature to help them manage their dog and litter information," said David
Roberts, Assistant Vice President of Registration and Customer Service.
"Breeders can access their personalized breeding, ownership, and registration
records from any computer with internet access at any time. This service is only
the beginning of a variety of online features planned for the future."
With the new Online Record Keeping service, breeders can record mating and birth
information for litters and view official AKC litter registration information
including dog registration status for all puppies in a litter. There is also a
handy address book function that gives breeders an easy place to store contact
information for co-owners and puppy buyers. And the AKC's secure, password
protected breeder record service keeps your information secure and private.
In addition to being able to record and view information, breeders can also
quickly print AKC Dog Ownership, Breeding, and Litter records. If the breeder
completes the necessary fields in the record-keeping system, all of the
information required for AKC record-keeping rules and regulations will be
pre-populated on these forms.
This new service also allows a breeder to record sale and ownership information
for the puppies and to manage puppy records by adding notes about breeding and
whelping.
For those breeders that have already taken advantage of online dog registration
to record sale and new ownership information for their puppies, this information
has been moved to the Online Record Keeping section of My AKC for easier access.
If you have an authenticated My AKC account (or want to start one - just go to
the home page on the upper right hand box and start the quick process),
maintaining your dog and litter records online is just a click away.
Follow these easy steps to get started:
1. Login to your My AKC account.

The American Kennel Club, founded in 1884, is a not-for-profit
organization which maintains the largest registry of purebred dogs in the world
and oversees the sport of purebred dogs in the United States. The AKC is
dedicated to upholding the integrity of its registry, promoting the sport of
purebred dogs and breeding for type and function. Along with its nearly 5,000
licensed and member clubs and its affiliated organizations, the AKC advocates
for the purebred dog as a family companion, advances canine health and
well-being, works to protect the rights of all dog owners and promotes
responsible dog ownership. More than 18,000 competitions for AKC-registered
purebred dogs are held under AKC rules and regulations each year including
conformation, agility, obedience, rally, tracking, herding, lure coursing,
coonhound events, hunt tests, field and earthdog trials. Affiliate AKC
organizations include the AKC Canine Health Foundation, AKC Companion Animal
Recovery and the AKC Museum of the Dog. For more information, visit
